Kick Off Your Detox with a Restorative Twist

A cleansing yoga pose for eliminating toxins

Everyone who just ate or drank too much for some special occasion, raise your hand. (I will now continue writing this article one-handed, since my other arm is high above my head.)

If, like me, you are sitting at your desk today feeling as if you've veered off the mindfulness path, go easy on yourself. There is no sense in spending your energy on regret. All any of us needs to do to get back on track is to start again.

It really is as simple as that. The sooner we start again, the sooner we'll find our way.  And the more gently we renew our efforts, the more comforted and inspired we'll be.

I recommend spending some time in a delicious restorative twist to kick off any kind of cleanse-and-renew plan. Twists help our bodies detox.

Just like wringing out a washcloth squeezes out the old, dirty water, twisting poses help the body cleanse and release any accumulated gunk.

Making the twist restorative keeps the process gentle and nurturing — two qualities we could all use more of. May this pose help ease your way back onto the path.

In this video clip, yoga expert Rodney Yee demonstrates a variation of the seated twist pose. Read on below the video for my simple instructions and tips for doing this detoxification seated twist pose on the floor.

Simple Restorative Twist

  • Find some empty space on your floor or your bed.
  • Grab your yoga bolster or two of your firmest pillows.
  • Sit with your legs outstretched straight in front of you.
  • Bend your knees and bring both shins to your left side.
  • Bring the bolster right up against your right hip.
  • Place your hands on either side of the bolster, and breathe here as your gradually rotate your torso so that your belly button is directly facing the bolster.
  • Gently lower your revolving torso down onto the bolster. Let your head turn to whichever side is most comfortable.
  • Stay here and breathe. Do as little as possible. With each breath, let your body sink more deeply down toward the floor.
  • After a few minutes, repeat on the other side.

Earlier in my office routine I was use to sit on the chair for entire day and literally felt exhausted in the evening. One day I found this wonderful exercise which can be done just by sitting at the chair. Since then I spend 10-15 min. doing this exercise every day and I am feeling literally relaxed after doing it.

I am also looking for Yoga exercise(s) for hand and legs muscles, pls. suggest good reference for it.

Dorothy, I do believe that this Yoga exercise works best in tight office schedule.
