I feel like I've spent my whole life ALMOST in shape, ALMOST healthy, but haven't quite been able to get to that place where I'm really psyched about my body. I've tried every diet and workout routine...anyone have anything else I might try?

A few things that have worked for me:
yoga
breathing exercises
meditation
macrobiotics
raw diet
volunteering

it's the connection to the mind that makes the body most happy, i think :-)
good luck on your path!

Hi Carrie:

I am right there with you. I eat super healthy and excercise about 5 times a week and am still 5 lbs away from where I want to be. And let's not discuss my flabby belly : )

I think what works is trying new things, especially things that you can have fun with.. tennis, volleyball, swimming long distance, trail running, basketball, road biking, yoga, pilates, tai chi, etc. Not only will something fun encourage you to do it more often, but your muscles will respond better if they are exposed to new challenges. I just started playing tennis again and I was pooped after 1 1/2 hours of singles. It so fun and a great workout.

Also, now that it's summer, you might make a vow to bike to as many places as possible, as opposed to using your car. Not only will you help the environment, but you'll burn tons of calories while you're seeing new things. My husband and I are going to try that this summer and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll bet I'll eat less at a restaurant knowing I need to get on a bike afterward.

And lastly, I've heard from many people in your situation that a detox diet helps them get to where they want to be, especially if nothing else has worked.

Good luck,

Joelle

Hi Carrie,

I have found that yoga changes my body in great ways, both mentally and physically.  Even doing a 1/2 hour DVD like Yoga Fit makes a difference a few times a week. The other thing that has always been successful for me is following the book Fit For Life, by Harvey & Marilyn Diamond. It is not a diet, but more a healthy way of life, It is about eating proper food combinations so that your body works to the best of its ability. When I followed this plan ( which I admit, I am not now) my body really changed and I lost weight in places I never could. I always go back to this way when I need help and it really works. Yogi Detox Tea is a nice treat too.  It doean't clean you out like some other teas, just helps you release excess water and toxins. Hope this helps: ) Good Luck

I lost 20kgs (44 lbs) 2/3 years ago - I found out what was weakening me and stopped it - for me it was alcohol and then I took up lots of exercise - no change in diet which was already healthy. I am a huge fan of James Ray who says "Avoid all that weakens you, embrace all that makes you strong" check out his new book Harmonic Wealth about getting what u want in the 5 pillars - Financial, mental, relational, spiritual and PHYSICAL

My #1 advice: Get into a REGULAR yoga practice-- at least 3 times a week, the more the better. This will not only change your body externally & boost your metabolism, but it will make you feel GOOD in your body! But you must have a regular practice to get the results. If you can do 4 classes a week it would be even better.. As much as you can!
I have in the past been uncomfortable about my body, & I too tried "every diet & workout routine", but never could get to that place where I looked & FELT good in my body.. Until I got into yoga! With a regular yoga practice & a healthy diet (with LOTS of fresh or lightly steamed veggies & enough protein), I can say I feel GREAT- completely different than I'd previously felt all my life!
After a couple months of a regular yoga practice (and eating healthy) you will feel amazing!!

Hi Carrie,

Just to share my experience:

I've been active in sports since young and was able to maintain an ideal weight for a long time despite my love for food, until 2 years ago (I'm 42 now).

Despite regular running exercise (3 times a week, 30 minutes each time), I wasn't able to bring down my weight like I used to do.  It was depressing to have to keep buying new work pants due to expanding waistline.

The situation started changing after I joined a colleague in a yoga class.  Merely a few sessions of hot yoga, and I noticed a weight loss of about 2 kg.  Of course, the dramatic improvement in general well-being was delightful.

In the last three months, I discover a very effective weight control exercise for myself:
A 15-minute yoga as warm-up exercise, before my regular 1-hour evening run (3~4 times a week).  I'm now back to the same ideal weight 10 years ago.

Hope this little experience sharing helps.
