Eco adventures with family and friends

Wendy Redall over at our "Stream of Consciousness" blog has a great post on eco adventures, and how they bring families close together. Here's a small bit:

"The summer of 2008 is shaping up to be an expensive one for travel. As gas edges near $4 a gallon, airlines struggle and hotel prices escalate, this summer may be one to opt for simple adventures that are low in cost and resources but high on adventure and camaraderie. For our family, nothing fits that bill like a traditional camping trip, with opportunities to hike, play and look for wildlife.

From the time our kids were toddlers, we’ve pitched our tent in scenic surroundings and explored all that was within close range – water, woods and trails have provided hours of impromptu entertainment. And there’s nothing like an evening campfire, coupled with tracing constellations in the black night sky, to unwind together."

Living in Colorado, I've learned to appreciate a good camping trip with friends (my family all lives far away from here). There's nothing like spending time away from the city in the mountains, enjoying beautiful natural landscapes and living simply to help clear the mind and feel at peace about life.

And it doesn't all have to be about relaxation - there's tons of fun stuff to do, including hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and more. Being outdoors is all about having a great time.

My fiancee and I are looking forward to summer so we can kick off our season of outdoor fun, and we plan to camp, hike and backpack as much as we can. In fact, we're going to get an early start: we're joining some friends at the end of May on a climbing trip in southern Colorado.

What about you? Are any of you planning a trip soon, or have one already scheduled for summer?

I've just begun planning our summer trip, which pretty much involves settling on a date and letting my parents know we're coming. They have a house on Cape Cod, and we go up every summer for a week of biking, kayaking, hiking, and whale watching.

My favorite thing to do there is to get up at dawn, stop at our favorite donut shop for some donuts and coffee, and go out to Nauset Light Beach to watch grey seals playing in the surf. That's my personal happy spot.

Ok...I'm beginning to think that I should pay the East Coast a visit soon. Seems like I'm missing out on a lot of cool stuff!
