Hey There Everyone,


Does Yoga really help with weight loss and fitness?  I've been thinking about a yoga class, if for nothing else to reduce the stress in my life.  Does it also help with weight loss?

Hi and welcome to the community!

Yoga can help you lose weight and maintain a very good level of fitness. As with all fitness-related activities though, the benefits are directly tied to the level of effort you put into doing them

Absolutely. An active yoga practice will help with weight loss directly as exercise/burning calories, and indirectly as it helps you get in touch with your body and connect with yourself. Once I started getting into yoga, an overall more healthy lifestyle was soon to follow because I had really tuned into my body for the first time. Best of luck!

It sure does. But there is so much more yoga brings to weight loss than the net calories burned. Yoga strengthens the body while quieting the mind.
For many people, over time, yoga becomes much more than a fitness routine. It becomes a way of life. Years ago I started practicing yoga to balance out my marathon training. What practicing yoga did that I didn't expect was it to changed my way of life, and deepened the connection between my mind, body and spirit dramatically.
Not only did I become a stronger, more well balanced and agile person, but I also became much more conscious individual.
I remember one day in the middle of my morning practice, something happened that caught me quite by surprise. I heard my stomach make a little digestive squeal, which would normally make me giggle. But instead of giggling it made me feel like crying. I felt over come with emotion. Why did such a silly noise that would normally make me chuckle cause me to well up inside?
Something inside me heard my tummy's squeal as my body actually "speaking to me". It spoke to me like a loved one. All of a sudden I became deeply aware of how wonderful of a creation my body truly is, and how hard I have been on it for so many years. My poor body. The years of critiquing, pushing, analyzing, comparing and competing I had put it through, consciously and sub-consciously. Had I ever looked at my body through the loving eyes of a mother? Appreciating my body for being beautiful and whole as it is. How strong and wonderful it felt as it moved gracefully in and out of every pose with each deep and delicate inhale and exhale of breath.
I won't digress further. I will just say in sum, yoga will not only provide support for weight loss, but it will also support being you.
Yoga doesn't just live with you on the mat.

Nature created the perfect weight-lifting object for each & every person-- your OWN BODY! The practice of yoga tones your entire body INSIDE & out. It will tone & strengthen your muscles, while at the same time helping you to become more flexible. It also tones & detoxifies your internal organs, and improves digestion.
It helps with weight-loss for many reasons. One is that doing yoga tones & boosts your endocrine system (such as your thyroid), and this helps your metabolism to run more efficiently. It also helps you connect to your body & how you really feel inside, so you are less inclined to over-eat.
And often times we store body fat when we are stressed, and yoga will GREATLY help you to maintain a calm & centered state even in the face of stressful situations.
When you try yoga though, give it a few months of going several times a week to see & feel the results.
It really will change your life!
