Hey There,

I've been offline for quite a while.  Not really thinking about fitness or weight loss. Trying to convince myself that it's o.k to be 40 lbs overweight.  It isn't.

I have however come to a place where I accept myself here, where I am.  I have a strong spiritual support group that has helped me to come to this acceptance.

I'm going to be 50 yrs old in about 2 weeks.  I don't to spend the second half of my life being 40 lbs overweight, with this in mind...........Does anyone have any suggestions for low impact aerobic exercise ?  I have a venous ulcer on my ankle and can't do a lot of walking or jumping around.  I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Thanks !

Hi, well I'm no expert on anything fitness related but I do know that my 70 yr. old mother swears by swimming. She has had alot of  problems with restless leg syndrome and a problem where her hands and feet were tightening up almost to a claw (some sort of circulation/arthritis thing). She started swimming about 30 mins a day and according to her after the first day she felt relief from her circulation issues and now 3-4 months later shes trimmer and more active than she has been in 30 years. I can't think of a better low impact activity and you can always include family (even small kids) into your work out to make it more fun.

Swimming is a great suggestion. It's a full body workout and helps build up muscle strength and keep joints flexible.

I also second playing with kids. They have so much energy, they're bound to make anyone stay sharp and active to keep up with them

A while after your initial post now...
Cardio exercise: swimming and water exercise (classes) might be just the thing, or you could try out a pair of walking poles (like ski poles, but for walking) which take a fair amount of weight off the legs and might relieve enough pressure to allow you to walk despite your ankle. Such poles are becoming more common -- not just for serious hikers anymore.

What about weight training/toning? You might consider getting a book or video/DVD with exercises using dumbbells or exercise bands, or trying mat-based exercises like Yoga or Pilates.  Muscle strengthening  helps people lose weight and feel more fit.
A balanced diet of exercise includes cardio, strength training, and stretching. If you can find something you like to do, or somebody to exercise with you, you'll be more likely to stick with it.
Best wishes!

Hi.  I agree with the other responses, that swimming or aqua aerobics is nice low impact alternative.  If you have access to a gym, you may consider a great machine called the NuStep which mimics a stairmaster sitting down and involves the upper body.  Also, any recumbent bike and/or airdyne bike will work as well.  Strength training will significantly help with weight loss as well.  Don't worry, you won't get huge, but the strength training will help boost your metabolism which will help with weight loss. Plus you can stimulate all of your muscle groups without putting pressure on your ankle.  Just make sure you have your physician's approval before starting any exercise program.

So, combining aerobic exercise, strength training and a healthy diet together will spell success!  If you are considering joining a gym, please consult a CERTIFIED personal trainer or fitness instructor for help - don't be afraid to ask to see their credentials too.  Remember that comittment to a healthier way of life is a lifestyle change.  Don't expect results overnight....it takes time, patience and persistence.

Best wishes!
