Earth Day is here once again, and comes after a great year in 2007 during which we observed a great increase in environmental awareness and momentum for the "Green" movement around the world.
There are many challenges that our planet faces, including global warming, a rapidly growing population, depletion of our natural resources, and endangered species quickly becoming extinct.
We all know it is impossible to alleviate all of these problems in a single day. However, we can still make an impact by taking action in our individual lives.
How will you mark Earth Day this year?
Whether you will work to "green" your town and take part in community projects, or make a personal lifestyle change to reduce your impact on the environment, let us know
Also, take a moment to reflect on how you've become more eco-friendly in the past year, and perhaps helped others become a bit more "green" too :)Edited by: GranolaJoe on Apr 22, 2008 9:02:15 AM |

Personally, I'm working on Earth Day, so I will be in the office. I will be out in nature for Arbor Day this weekend though, and most definitely be planting trees.
Nevertheless, every day has become Earth Day for me, and though I've always been an environmentally aware person, I've really stepped it up in the last year.
This is a list of some of the ways I've made changes to make less of an impact on the environment:
- Sold my car, bought some vintage bikes that I absolutely love, and started riding the bus to work
- Use reusable bags when grocery shopping (though I AM forgetful and have left them in the car at times. I try to carry everything as long as it fits in two arms
)
- Stopped eating beef and chicken products and eat about 90% vegetarian meals (I don't buy meat products to stock up at home, but from time to time I still eat a tuna sandwich or shrimp)
- Learned about which plastics are recyclable so I can recycle more
- Walked or biked to the grocery store whenever possible
It's been really rewarding and to say the least, easy. It's surprising just how many eco-friendly practices are within an arms reach, but many people are unaware of.
I'm going to make it a point to help more people see just how easy it is to go green this year. Not only will they be making a difference, but they'll also feel a whole lot better about themselves |

My family treats Earth Day like an Ecological New Years. We revisit our green resolutions and see where there's room for improvement.

I too often forget my reusable bags in the car or at home, but I've really tried to make an effort recently to always bring them. And the plastic bags I have at home piling up near my fridge, I reuse them as often as possible for dog waste, waste basket liners and lunch bags. I have become very organized and knowledgeable about recycling. I've set up stations upstairs and downstairs in my home and carefully read the recycling collector outside my house so I know what it will and will not accept. We've replaced many of our lightbulbs with CFLs, as they've expired. I also learned more about composting and have added many more foods to my compost pile, and less waste to my trash, as a result. I unplug my appliances when I'm not using them (and remember to).
And, to my husband's great pleasure, I now turn off every light when I exit the room or house. I feel good about the small changes I've made this past year. |

I am very happy that Earth Day is being honored by more and more people each year. My Earth Day resolution this year will be the same as it has been over the last several years. To make every day Earth Day. Each day I will make every effort to live consciously, and to eliminate un-ecofriendly habits and to replace them with green ones more and more as my awareness and education grows. I see going green as a process. Like the saying goes, when we know better we do better (if all goes well). |
