Hi, I am a Board Chairman of the Humanitarian Media Foundation (HMF), taking an executive role, too, with the 2008 HMF Film/Media Festival & Conference, which will be taking place December 10-14, 2008 at the Tribeca Cinemas, Gallery and Event spaces.

We will be doing the customary Call for Entries for the Film festival portion, and a Call for Papers for the Conference portion, but I wanted to open topic suggestions to the Gaiam community in terms of what you would most like to see covered at the Festival & Conference.

As further information:

The mission of the HMF, upon its launch May 1, 2008, seeks to tap into the power of the media—film, both documentary and narrative; art and music; print, web, television, new media and photojournalism—and extend their influence more broadly, so that humanitarian issues are not just covered in brief articles, commercials, profiles, or soundbytes, but can be explored and given context, so that their importance is more widely known.

To this end, the HMF will be enlisting the support and partnership of news agencies, journalists, filmmakers, writers, new media and Web 2.0 sources, artists, international NGO's, figures in international policy, and international philanthropy--among others--to bring attention to areas of humanitarian importance and to act as a conduit among them, so that collaborations and exchanges of ideas might more easily take place.

The 2008 Festival & Conference will include the following components:

1) A high-profile international, competitive film festival for international film, both narrative and documentary, in short and long forms, including filmmakers, producers, film companies and international film figures interested in humanitarian subject matter;

2) A photographic gallery opening and exhibition, from among the world's greatest international artists and photojournalists, both to explore critical humanitarian crises and subject matter, but to raise funds for the issues themselves;

3) A high-profile media conference among international journalists, news agencies,new media companies, social networking and Web 2.0, filmmakers and documentarians, humanitarian NGO's and aid agencies, and individuals and institutions dedicated to international policy, to better facilitate collaboration critical to humanitarian media exposure.

In terms, especially, of the 3rd component--the conference--we are actively reaching out to the NGO and international aid agencies, academics, and other stakeholders for topic consideration--

--but I also wanted to open the topic to a more public sphere among those who would like to weigh in on what they would also like to see covered in terms of issues or populations at risk. We will then make sure to reach out to those best representing these areas of discourse.

Please feel free to respond to me here, via this thread, or otherwise, via e-mail to me personally at repansedeschoye@gmail.com with any suggestions.

Our official launch, again, is on May 1st, and in April we will be publicizing the HMF launch internationally, and the Festival & Conference as our first major initiative. We are already getting almost more interest than we can handle--even before officially launching. ;)

I hope this finds everyone well, and in the interim, thank you for your support and ideas.

Warmest regards,
RdS

P.S.

As an additional note, please know we would also warmly welcome donations to help support the Festival & Conference, including offering assistance to those in the international NGO and aid communities working in critically-affected areas to attend the Festival & Conference to better represent both their organizations and the issues--both as speakers and as representatives who may have contact with the varying areas of the media. They are indeed on the front lines and can better speak to the real and pragmatic needs of those populations affected or most at risk. We are actively fundraising to ensure the attendance of these organizations.

Donations levels come with certain benefits, which are delineated both on the HMF website, and via the "Donate Now" button, serviced by Network For Good/Groundspring. This can be found until launch on the HMF MySpace page:

We will soon be offering sponsorship information as well--should you know a company, individual, or organization who might like to act as a sponsor of the event, please contact sponsorships@humanitarianmedia.org. This includes the sponsorship of various events, screenings, conference sessions, and bursaries for NGO/aid agency attendance.
