Drugs in our drinking water

The AP today published the alarming results of its investigation of drinking water in U.S. cities: pharmaceuticals, including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones are present in water consumed by 41 million Americans.

While it's been made clear that the portions are tiny, doctors and scientists are concerned with the long-term effects of the consumption of these chemicals by the general public.

Though the story raises many alarms and questions, there is no resolution at this time. Undoubtedly, there will be outrage and pressure for government institutions to step up and address the situation, but in the meantime, we can only hope that our bodies won't be damaged while we wait.

Have any of you been aware of this issue and already find other sources of drinking water? How many of you will look elsewhere for water?

I saw this article, and what alarmed me even more than drugs in the drinking water was the nonchalance of the government about it!

Where I grew up in the mountains of PA, there were several watersheds for New York's metro area-- and there's not a pharmaceutical company around for miles, so how did these 'small' amounts of drugs get into the water?? All of the reservoirs are fenced off, even, so the thought that enough drugs got through the fences and were dumped in the water source to even be picked up by water testing (small=too much in this case) is scary.

I've got a carbon filter for the tap water... I hope it takes out pharmaceuticals as well as 99.9% of all the other stuff. :|

That's awful, it makes me glad that I get my water from a well just outside my house! I'm fairly certain there aren't many harmful chemicals in there, especially since there aren't any factories and such nearby. I would definitely use a filter though if you get your water from the city or county.
