Sugar Connection with PMS?

I have maintained very health conscious and active lifestyle (which includes sustainable living and yoga) for many years now. However despite I have experienced horrible PMS symptoms for almost two weeks out of each month as long as I can remember. Even when I cut out such things as alcohol and caffeine and  took B vitamin, calcium supplements, and tinctures... it didn't help.
After a mention in a book I read recently referring to how severe PMS maybe linked to sugar/carbohydrate sensitivity in certain women. I figured this was worth exploring so I decided to conduct an experiment on myself. This last year in an effort to reduce the severity of my PMS symptoms I eliminated all sugars with the exception of fruit, reduced my intake of grains and carbohydrates, and maintained more of a fresh veggies and protein diet with a moderate amount of healthy fats.
My PMS symptoms have disappeared entirely.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not on Atkins or any crazy fad diet here. I just altered my over all diet by eliminating and/or reducing the consumption of some of the things that have always been a big part of my diet (whole grains, whole flour, starchy veggies, dairy, processed foods (including some processed soy products that can have sugar slipped in, and natural candy, beer, wine, juice, etc.)
I still have a beer now and then or a treat, however since I have made this change I can't tell you the relief I have experienced.
I thought this might be worth sharing in case any other women may be experiencing the same frustration with PMS that I had prior to my personal discovery.

Okay, I have to say whole grains are back in a larger quantity, beer and all alcohol are out. After really narrowing it down for a while I discovered I am "very" sensitive to sugars and extremely reactive hormonally to "any" alcohol. I was only having one or two a week but it was enough to make the PMS soar!
It's all learning that's for sure.

Sugar Connection with PMS?

I am very curious about this. I was having extremem PMS symptoms (PMDD) and was told getting pregnant might help. It did not, the first time. Although back then I still drank when not pregnant of course. After this pregnancy I have decided to give it up entirely. Mostly because it would cause me a relapse in smoking that I would then have to invest time in quiting so it was just easier to give up both. I had attributed the relief I've been feeling to the new pill YAZ that the doctor put me on. Previously I refused birth control. Now I am thinking it might be alcohol? Are you sure it is more alcohol than sugar? Let me know, THANKS!

Personally I found it was more directly related to the alcohol than sugar. Since alcohol is a depressant, for some women it can worsen their symptoms during PMS.
Some literature I read in Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom also provided me with some very helpful information in regards to our hormones and refined sugars/carbohydrates and birth control. Dr. Christiane Northrup (author) has been a great resource for me.
I know hormones are very complex since there are so many variables, and it depends on the individual. I found the recent dietary changes I made really seemed to help.
I recently stopped taking birth control because in my case, no matter what pill I was on, my symptoms worsened instead of improving. However, I know the opposite is true for certain women.
