International Day of Peace is here! If you're not familiar with the event, no worries. Here's some background info:
What: The International Day of Peace provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of Peace on a shared date. Use the International Day of Peace annually to highlight the Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, 2001 to 2010.
Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International Day of Peace was first celebrated September 1982.
When: Annually, 21 September - The International Day of Peace
Where: Wherever you are.
Who: You and all who care about building Cultures of Peace for the children of this and future generations.
Why: To mark our individual and collective progress toward building Cultures of Peace, and serve as a reminder of our permanent commitment to Peace, above all interests and differences of any kind.
Individuals and Nations, acting in concert, DO make a difference in the quality of our lives, our institutions, our environment and our planetary future. Through cooperation, we manifest the essential Spirit that unites us amid our diverse ways.
How: Through various paths to personal and planetary Peace
Last year, more than 3500 Peace Day events took place in 200 countries, and this year, more than 2000 organizations in 190 nations are celebrating.
You can imagine that people are celebrating their event in many different ways and goals as individuals and groups, but here are some that I think are really interesting:
- GlobalMala Project / Rise: Yoga As Peace In Action: Organized by Shiva Rea (Catalyst), Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Seane Corn, Julia Butterfly Hill, Michael Franti, on September 21st - 23rd, more then 35 countries, hundreds of yoga studios and thousands of yoga practitioners worldwide will gather as a part of the Global Mala Project!
In less then one month, the global collective, from Hong Kong to Tel Aviv, London to Cape Town, Sydney to the hub event in Los Angeles will form a "mala around the earth". Join this worldwide community with fundraising celebrations to raise awareness and funds for some of the most essential issues of our times. Breathe the change you want to envision in the world!
- International Peace Day Vigil: This global 24-hour spiritual observation for peace is meant to demonstrate the power of prayer and other spiritual practices in promoting peace and preventing violent conflict. These worldwide spiritual observances will also help raise public awareness of the International Day of Peace and directly support the establishment of a global ceasefire. Individuals and groups are invited to support this worldwide initiative by committing to hold a 24-hour vigil on 21 September 2007.
- Peace Day Comedy: Stand Up for International Peace: In 48 cities, stand up comedy acts for peace, including The IMPROV (in 13 selected US cities), Punch Line Clubs, Yuk Yuk's in 15 Canadian Cities, The Comedy Store In London and Manchester, The Sydney Comedy Store, The Comics Lounge in Melbourne, Gotham Comedy Club in New York, The Comedy Store in San Diego, The Comedy and Magic Club, The Boston Comedy Connection, Crackers Comedy Clubs, Jongleurs in 8 UK cities.
As you can see, Peace Day is an opportunity to express commitment to making world peace a reality, or bring awareness to an important cause.
Nevertheless, promoting peace on more than just one day out of the year is also important. That being said, I would like to know: how do you make peace a part of your daily lives?
Is there a certain practice or routine that you have to maintain a peaceful state of mind and energy in yourself? Or do you have a certain goal, such as treating everyone equally, regardless of whether they treat you with or without respect?
Lastly, do you think that through our personal practices and promoting peace as individuals we can create a world without war?
I'd love to hear what all of you have to say Edited by: GranolaJoe on Sep 14, 2007 2:29:33 PM |

Dear GranolaJoe,
I'm glad you are spreading the word about Peace Day. Good for you! Since you are interested in peace, I think you might like a book I have co-written and I would like to send it to you for possible review on the Gaiam Community site.
This book, called Great Peacemakers, tells the true life stories of 20 great peacemakers from around the world, including famous leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as lesser known individuals who are making a positive difference in the world.
Great Peacemakers won the 2007 International PeaceWriting Award from the Peace and Justice Studies Association and the OMNI Center for Peace, Justice, and Ecology.
The book is also endorsed by two heads of state, including Dr. Oscar Arias, president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who said: “Powerful, well-researched and, above all, timely, Great Peacemakers should be required reading for the youth of the world.”
I would like to send you a copy as soon as they become available in about 4 weeks. May I have your name and mailing address? Thank you.
Sincerely,
Heather Chase
