If you have Type 2 Diabetes or know someone that does, I found a blog post with a great list of natural foods and supplements you can recommend to them for lowering blood sugar.

The author isn't against taking medications to help out, but as he points out, if you can do it naturally, it beats having to deal with nasty side effects like stomach cramps, diarrhea and gas!

Here's a summary for you, but please check out the link for full info

Food And Supplements That Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Cinnamon: Researchers are finding that cinnamon reduces blood sugar levels naturally when taken daily.

Chromium: There are studies that are finding that people with diabetes have lower Chromium levels that people without the disease.

Zinc: The mineral Zinc plays a huge role in your body’s production and storage of insulin.

Salacia oblonga: Ohio State University, researchers saw insulin levels drop 23 percent and blood sugar levels drop 29 percent in patients who took a 1,000-mg dose of the herb. Amazing!

We put cinnamon into our morning smoothie every day. My husband lowered his cholesterol about 40 points using only cinnamon. My parents did the same. It's amazing!

Really? How'd you figure that out?

Actually, my mom read about it in some supermarket tabloid, I think-lol. I researched it tho and there are studies that support it.

My parents have told everyone they know (they're in their 80's). Most of their old, physically bad-off friends would rather pop a pill, unfortunately.

My mom has had high cholesterol for about 40 years and refused to take anything more than a diuretic for her high blood pressure. Cinnamon made it drop down to about 220, which is really low for her. The doctor was amazed but he didn't buy the cinnamon as the reason. It was the only thing she changed tho and her diet was already healthy.

I'm glad to hear that simple foods like these can go a big way in helping people  cope with their diet.

I never used to have an issue with food until last year. Nowadays my body reacts very sharply to foods with high cholesterol, and even with food that has just a bit more than average (reason for why I eat about 95% vegetarian).

Maybe cinnamon will help me out

GJ,  I wonder why you had such a rapid change!?  You need cholesterol to live (nerves/brain) or at least you need to convert something into cholesterol!  You asked about sugar, but, somehow we got to cholesterol...funny how these posts go.  Most info that I have read suggests complex carbs versus simple sugars, whole grains etc., which you probably already do!  With respect to cholesterol, a recent study out of Australia suggested that exercise plus 6000 mg of fish oil (if you eat fish) reduced body fat, triglycerides and, cholesterol.  I could not find the article posted, but, read it in the last 2 months.  Note there seems to be some controversy regarding plant based sources versus marine sources!?  Not sure where the research is pointing at this time.  Maybe you have come across this in your reading?

Hey Aerangis - it's nice to see you back. Sorry for taking long to respond.

I'll be the first to admit that nutritional information tends to go very much over my head. I'm not a good at math, and sometimes trying to follow dietary recommendations feels very much like math to me.

I have heard that fish oil can help out - my girlfriend is taking some supplements actually. I wish there was a "natural nutrition for dummies" book out there for people like me. It would help out a lot

I've been doing a whole lot better since I stopped eating meat though. I don't have dizzy spells after eating and I generally eat lots of vegetable based meals.

This past weekend I ate what felt like a healthy, balanced meal: corn tostadas with sour cream, black beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados and parmessan/romano cheese on top.

Simple, easy, healthy and filling.

Something that can help both with blood sugar AND high blood pressure is Isotonix OPC-3. It has grapeseed extract, resveratrol (red wine extract) and pycnogenol (from maritime pine bark; has been studied extensively for safety). For me, I haven't been sick since I started taking it! I encourage everyone I know to try it for 3 months and see what it can do for them! I get mine at thelivingyou.com. I do consider it a natural food because it's not a pill, it's a powder you mix with water.

Chai.  But without the milk and sugar. Simply ginger, clove, cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper.  We have also found that the Ayurvedic herbs Turmeric, Gurmar, Neem, Tulsi (holy basil) are the best ways to balance blood sugar.
