No Reincarnation For You

In yet another ridiculous, totalitarian and culturally destructive action, China has banned Tibetan living Buddhas from reincarnating without permission from its atheist leaders.

The ruling goes into effect on September 1.

While it sounds silly to think that the Chinese government can control reincarnation, it does further undermine the influence of the Dalai Lama and other current and future reincarnate lamas.

Finding and recognizing a living Buddha is a serious task, and China has banned anyone outside China from taking part in the process. Essentially, China is trying to make it so no new living Buddha can be identified.

China has already done horrible things in the past to destroy Tibetan culture and religion:

In 1995, after a Dalai Lama-approved search for the Panchen Lama ended and a boy was identified as his reincarnated form, he mysteriously disappeared and hasn't been seen since. China has also encouraged its own population to move into Tibetan territory and slowly replace native Tibetans over time.

This is pretty scary stuff...and so incredibly sad. Imagine if a culture with such rich tradition dating back centuries is destroyed...and for what reason? It's really unfortunate that China yields so much influence and can throw its weight around while the world just has to sit back and watch...

I read about this in Newsweek. Ludicrous and just plain bad behavior.

Did I read it right that the Dalai says he isn't planning to be reincarnated in Tibet anyway?

I believe so. This BBC news story reiterates his intention to reincarnate elsewhere:

"Tibetans outside China say the new regulations will not affect the selection of next Dalai Lama.

"We believe this ruling by the Chinese government will not go down well with Tibetan monks," says Thubten Samphel, spokesman for the Tibetan government in exile.

He says choosing the child who is a reincarnation of an eminent monk can only be done by an organisation with spiritual authority, and that does not include China's Communist government.

Also, the spokesman, based in Dharamsala, India, says that the Dalai Lama has already said he will be born outside Tibet if he is not allowed to return there during his lifetime."

Yes, isn't it an outrage?!
I recently watched a great documentary (you may have seen or heard of it) called "Ten Questions for the Dalai Lama" . In this film the Dalai Lama states that the decision as to if another Dalai Lama is appointed after his passing remains with the Tibetan People. He did not specify his reincarnate intentions. However he did confirm that the predecessor the Tibetans selected years ago was captured and is to this day being held prisoner by the Chinese Government (and the youngest prisoner under such charges) and being replaced by a predecessor of their choosing (as you may have read about in the media, etc).
I just got back from a conference today in which the Dalai Lama gave an incredible speech. I was in awe of his presence, wisdom, compassion, charm and strength.
