Scientific reasons for why you should do Yoga

I stumbled upon this great blog for new Yogis seeking inspiration called Daily Cup of Yoga. For people needing more than just a friend's recommendation, they posted scientific reasons for doing Yoga.

According to a study out of Boston University and McLean Hospital, practicing Yoga has a positive effect on brain chemistry and is a beneficial treatment for disorders such as depression, anxiety and epilepsy.

Another great find from the study was that Yoga has no side effects

I've read some posts from members here saying Yoga has helped out in many ways, and I'd like to know:

For those of you that practice often - do you feel that Yoga helps you mentally as well as physically? Can any of you share how Yoga has helped you with depression, anxiety, or any other difficulty? Lastly, does this research make any of you more motivated to do Yoga?

For Me, yes! It has helped my depression, anxiety and weight. I have found that i do daily affimations, make gratituded lists, and send out much more positive and healing, not only to myself, but to others.  I started yoga for the health/weight bennifits, and being in my early 40's it is less stressful to my body. Since i started a year ago, i really have found the mind and spirit aspect of yoga to be as or more important than the weight loss/ body aspect. I am excited now in more ways about life than i have been in years. And just signed up for another year at my gym. I started out two days a week, and by the 3rd month, went up to three days a week, have been doing that for a year. We also performed the global mala bennifiting War Child and thankfully i was able to stay with and complete the 108 sun salutations.

Yes, it has definitely helped me in countless ways since I first began practicing Ashtanga. I was an endurance runner for almost ten years and I recently decided to take up Ashtanga full time (I had been doing my practice a few times per week in addition to running for a few months prior) and I don't regret it one bit. The physical benefits that I received from running are there with yoga in addition to tremendous mental and spiritual benefits it couldn't offer. My breathing is deeper, it has helped reduce stress, and my weight has regulated itself better than when I was a runner. I feel a glow about myself that beats out any runner's high that I have ever experienced. It's lighted a fire within that feels amazing.
I really loved running, but at this point of my life yoga has really become a passion beyond any other. It's a true lifestyle.

I have just recently come back to doing Yoga after a stressful 2 year break . Nothing makes me feel as good or gives you the natural high that a good Yoga class can. I also feel like I am more open spiritually, and am able to receive and acknowledge signs that are given to me. I love that anyone at any level can do it, and you constantly can improve over your entire life span.
