Green buildling projects?

Hi there! We live in the Bay Area and are looking to build a green home on some acreage up on Mendocino County, starting early next year. In the interim, we'd like to get some experience by volunteering to help others with their own green home buidling projects. Is there anyone out there who is undertaking a green homebuilding project themselves and would like a couple sets of strong, willing hands to help? Or does anyone know of any such projects currently underway?

Ideally we'd love to meet some like-minded people in the area who'd be willing to reciprocate by helping us when the time comes, but if that's not the case then no big deal. We'd be happy just to learn from you!

Thanks!!!!

MaryJane & Charlie

Hi there,

You may want to look into the Solar Living Institute (http://www.solarliving.org).  They have classes, which obvioiusly aren't free, but if you don't find other work in this area they would be a good option.  Just up the road in Ukiah.

Some folks I work(ed) with are trying to put together a project like what you are talking about here in Colorado.  An earth-friendly greenhouse made of earth!  I'm hoping we can document the process and post information here.

Hi MaryJane,

John Schaeffer here for the Solar Living Institute and Gaiam Real Goods. I strongly suggest you come and visit us at the Solar Living Center in Hopland which is about 90 minutes by car from the Golden Gate Bridge. We have 12 acres of permaculture gardens, lots of natural buildings, a 5,000 square foot straw bale store and demonstrations of renewable energy abound. check out www.solarliving.org to learn more.

Further our Solar Living Institute puts on dozens of classes in all types of green and natural building. check out the same website for class schedule and syllabus. Our SolFest Festival in August has many workshops on green and natural building as well.

Lastly, check out our Solar Living Sourcebook which you can order from www.gaiam.com or www.solarliving.org which is a full compendium on passive solar, natural building, finding your place in the country, renewable energy and much more.

I hope you find these resources helpful. Good luck in your ventures. I've been living in Mendocino County for 35 years off the grid on solar and hydro and it's a great life!

Best,

John Schaeffer

Mary Jane,

I forgot to mention that the SLI frequently has natural building project that you can volunteer for. Contact Lindsay Dailey (lindsay.dailey@solarliving.org) - currently on vacation until March 19th or Doron Amiran (doron.amiran@solarliving.org) to get on the list for volunteer on the job training opportunities.
