Clash w/spouse on eco-friendly choices?

Anyone besides me facing a spouse who is resisting doing things to reduce your energy usage or live more eco-consciously?

I want my husband to trade in his big gas-guzzling truck for a much more economical vehicle. He is holding onto it like a security blanket! He says he's not giving up having a truck.

I suggested a diesel model so we could use biodiesel whenever possible, or even buy our own home biodiesel generator like the ones Gaiam sells. He seems more open to this than to a hybrid ...

Anyone know which hybrid SUVs or trucks are considered good ones by the environmental groups -- in other words "true" hybrids?

Yes! I often get little sniggers and frowns when I bring up anything environmental, like it is all a big joke. This happens with family and friends.

I have decided to start slowly and I am gradually changing our living habits. I have composted for several years, only buy low energy bulbs, recycle diligently, try to conserve electricity and water as much as possible in our home and I am a careful consumer. This way I think the small changes will become habit for us all. Perhaps I am living in denial??

The vehicle situation is another thing entirely though. I think we are a long way from getting a hybrid at the moment.

The diesel truck thing isn't a bad way to go.  I owned a 2004 Prius but the payments and insurance were killing me, and I wanted to experiment with biodiesel and SVO (straight vegetable oil) so I bought a cheap 1995 diesel pickup truck.  I now run it on biodiesel which I get from a station in Boulder (Colorado), but I have the Gaiam kit for converting it to run on SVO.  I'll install that when I can either get an indoor (heated!) shop to do it in, or the weather gets a bit warmer.

The ideal setup for me would be to be with someone who agreed with my eco-friendly lifestyle and has a hybrid, since I do love having a pickup truck.  My friends like my having a pickup truck too!  Which I kind of count towards my eco points, since my having a truck and being willing to lend it out helps them not have to have a pickup truck.

The one thing I would do differently would be to get a more recent model truck that got a bit better mileage.  A 2000 or 2001 would have been much better than what I have now.  But once I get my SVO conversion in, my tank will be 40+ gallons, which should work for most of my trips and will be essentially a near-zero carbon impact.

He is riding the bus to work now!
He wouldn't give up his truck but at least it is now only going to the park and ride.

My husband thinks organic food and going green is just a marketing ploy to get yuppies and hippies to spend more money.

Just remind him that he's eating pesticides in regular food

Yes...similiar problem but with spouse and teen/adult children. A husband who continually throws plastic drink bottles and other recyclable items in the regular trash so I have to dig them out. In spite of my organic, vegetarian cooking for over 17 years which he swears is exceptional cooking(!), my pointing out each and every meat recall, and my never-catch-the-winter-colds and flu health, he still insists on eating over-sized portions of meat with each meal (HE has to purchase, grill/cook). Sadly, two children who were partially vegetarians have given it up and now buy into his philosophy that a carnivore life is simply the way evolution meant us to be. Luckily, I've been able to convince that composting is important albeit taking out the compost, like the trash, isn't something a teenager does without prompting. I pouted a couple years ago until I was able to get a Prius Hybrid and my birthday present last year was a professional tune-up of my 1972 Peugot bicycle. Rebate coupons for energy efficient lighting worked since the bulbs were thus FREE but convincing an heat-as-you-need-it water heater (as is used throughout Europe) is still a hard sell.  Getting them all to stop buying plastic bottled water and soft drinks would be another step forward someday. Bit by bit, year by year, perhaps the sense of living green will prevail... We MUST keep the faith and keep talking about these issues until the common sense of renewable and sustainable lifestyles becomes totally mainstream. There is no other option.

I too have some battles at home and some times the neighbors think I am "too much."  It embarrases the dh that I critique their visible garbage that should be recycled  and what they are using on the lawns.

Our kids are young so I have been able to positively influence them and they often report or ask about things being good / bad for the Earth. Yea for that!

The dh is really fine with any thing with a fast return on investment IF it doesn't impede his lifestyle or efficiency of time.  He can't stand the slow to bright light of CFLs and sometimes the "shade."  Choices are improving and I agreed happily for old bulbs in closets where we have the light on for just a few moments anyway.

I try to be optomistic, that without me as his wife, he'd be living pretty "hard on the Earth."  Even more astounding are the changes I have beed given credit for by his mother.  Recycles as well as me now amoung other efforts.  Still old school on some stuff, but LEAPS over their life sans my example.

I have our seven yr old asking non-recycling neighbors why they don't.  It's working toward increased participation AND comes off much better than from me.

We have compromised... I returned to eating poultry after 10 yrs of vegetarianism on occasion so there weren't so many special meals.  With better prices and access of organic (or natural versions) we eat more chicken now.  I allowed beef starting last yr as we can now get LOCAL ORGANIC and at same or better prices than WF or Costco!!  I am telling lots of folks that get incentives from recall and cancer fears.  It's really changing for those of us seeing the "future" finally arrive.
