yoga + weight training?

I've always (since high school) done weight training as a way to stay in shape;;;though lately, the goal is a more modest effort of just warding off middle age! I've never tried yoga, but am increasingly interested in it. Can anyone tell me if yoga and weight training will work well together? Any suggestions on where I should start with yoga to get off on the best foot (position?)? Thanks for any suggestions - -

I would recommend the Yoga for Beginners Kit, it contains all the props and a beginners media, once you get used to the props and feel good about doing yoga, you can try the Yoga Conditioning for Weight loss Dvd. Yoga and weight loss training will work together, just make sure you begin by with small practices 15-20 minutes max on each category, I  have also battle with weight loss since the birth of my last kid (mid 20's) and it has been very hard to lose  the weight, so don't get discourage. Remember that healthy  weight loss takes time!

In my experience/opinion, yoga works well with anything! Sure it'll work out to do both... but beware, if you get the yoga bug (the equal focus on flexibility AND strength... and breath, and...) you'll no longer need the weight training and the stiffness and chiropractic vulnerability that come with it! I can think of no better way to ward off middle age. I'm certainly younger in my body now than I was 10 years ago when I went to my first yoga class... and, yes, yoga CLASS is the answer to your last question. If possible, find yourself in a class with an experienced instructor. There are tons of great videos that can help you maintain a healthy practice at home, but never can they substitute interaction with a skilled instructor. Have fun!

Rodney Yee created a yoga kit with Gaiam called Yoga Burn that includes very cool gloves that integrate small weights around the wrists, and a yoga practice on DVD that is designed around the gloves.

We received very positive comments from the Gaiam Customer Panel members who tested this product. They said they could really feel the difference in their arms. FYI, the gloves are rather petite.

Hi,

I've been practicing yoga for about a year. I've only used videos and I really love it. I started looking at yoga programs on Comcast OnDemand and I liked Rodney Yee's the best, so I bought them and I use them everyday. I also do the routines by myself so I can focus on them more without the commentary and audio cues.
I'm 19 and I workout hard everyday, so I considered myself very fit, but continually injured myself be over exuberant with the yoga. Now I just try to take it easy and I don't force or strain to complete poses and I really love yoga. Sometimes I do two sets a day and I feel great.

Good Luck and I hope you will enjoy yoga as much as I do.

Hi, and thanks for the advice. Which RY videos do you like the best? Since I haven't done yoga before, I've got a dumb question: when you say you work out hard, I know that means you're tired when you're done...what kind of fatigue is it? Cardio? Muscular exhaustion? I'm just trying to understand the nature of the workout. Thank you, and keep it up!

My favorites are the Power Yoga Strength and Flexibility, on separate DVDs. I bought them on Amazon, but I believe the Gaiam shop has some thing similar in a set.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00062DKO0/ref=pd_cp_d_title/105-3701555-3688406

The Amazon reviews are also very helpful.
I noticed when i first started the videos I got a headache and I felt dizzy and lightheaded from the forward bends. I actually had to stop several times, but I haven't felt like that since calming the practice down. I was being I bit rough and forcing myself into the hand balancing positions which are the most difficult part of the videos.

The videos basically follow the ashtanga sun salutation, so it's good versatile foundation.
There's tons of asanas on the web below is a link for a site that I've been using to add a few extra positions.

ashtangayoga.info/asana-vinyasa/primary-series/index.html

Unfortunately the names are all in sanskrit so it's a little hard to figure out.

I ride the spinner every other day, just for maintenance,  since I've been focusing more on yoga lately.I also do pilates with weighted balls and incorporate QiGong, breathing and meditation exercises in at the end of my yoga practice.
I don't have any religious affiliation,  but yoga has opened my awareness, I feel keenly energized and calm after my yoga practice. It's addictive. I was hooked within one week of devoted practice.

I'm glad I was helpful. I don't think you can go wrong with any RY videos.

My husband and i did a tai chi video together with these weighted balls.  It was another Gaiam video, of course. I don't know, but that might be something you would be interested in.

Well, it has certainly made it clear that I needed some kind of flexibility and stretching in my fitness regime, that's for sure! As you'd expect, it is getting a bit easier (I've been at it for about 5 weeks, doing it twice a week), and the initial soreness is gone - but I suspect that it'll be back as soon as I move to some new positions.

The biggest problem I'm having is that I don't know how to make time for everything (a problem we've all got, I know): I try to lift weights 3 times a week, do yoga at least twice (3 would be better), and then I need to do cardio work - - when? Having said all that, and done my habitual whining, I really do feel better with the yoga added to the mix, and I'd certainly recommend it!

Hey RS and all!

I just wanted to share my thoughts/ opinions...If you practice power yoga everyday, you do not need to do any other exercise...I used to train very hard with weights and once i started to practice yoga, the need for other forms of exercise slipped away. Power yoga provides  a great "workout" for both cardio and strength. When your mind is quiet, you will look your very best...that is attainable through yoga. best of luck with your journey

I started a new weight training routine not long ago.  I also started doing yoga a couple of weeks ago.  The new routine was pretty intense.  I wanted to separate my cardio to a separate day from my weight training.  Now that I am used to the new program I do cardio, and then weights on the same day.  I find doing cardio first is best cause you got a good buzz going for the weight training.  The other way around won't work for me.  So I do weights, and cardio three days a week.  I do yoga three times a week.  So I'm at the gym five days a week.  It took me a number of weeks of experimenting.  Just try different weekly regimens until you find one that feels right for you.  For me the combination of cardio, weights, and yoga is a great thing.  It is worth taking the time to figure out a weekly plan that works for you.  Just do what feels right for the body.
Peaceful Regards

I couldn't disagree more with this misleading information.  Weight training does not lead to  the abovementioned.   INCORRECT TRAINING would.  Weight training is very beneficial to health and wellness as is stretching.  A holistic approach is required to health, one single way is not the right way.  Stretching is essential to injury prevention, wellness and vitality.  I encourage you to improve your flexibility and you will gain benefits in all areas of your health.  If you don't like stretching by yourself or unsure of how to start, yoga would be great as it provides a systematic approach and classes provide the benefit of an instructors attention to your form.

Please, please, please...to really learn yoga, please find a certified Iyengar teacher or a teacher that has not only certification but years of personal practice.  YOGA IS A WAY OF LIFE.   It bothers my soul that people would tell you that you can learn yoga just by watching a video!  I have practiced, studied, and am certified to teach yoga.  I also lift weights, spin, run and, essentially, workout at least 2 hours a day at a club.  Why?  I find yoga is my center no matter what I do.  Without the core wisdom and practice of yoga, nothing else I do would matter because I would not have the awareness of mind/body/soul I have learned from yoga.  In the development of my mind/body awareness, I realized I needed with aging, more cardio and weights.  It all works together.  I prepare with yoga asanas and stretch in yoga asanas.  The yoga of the industry YogaFit is not pure.  I know because I am YogaFIt certified but was first trained Iyengar and read much about the Wisdom of Yoga (which you should read a book by Stephen Cope not to mention many other books) Essentially, and I apologize, but please understand...yoga is more than an exercise because it requires ALL of you.  If you truly wish to add it, please enter into it with honor.  Namaste.

I've tried two types of yoga... Bikram Yoga and lyengar yoga. I have had great experiences with both, and I prefer Bikram yoga over lyengar, because Bikram is far more intense and challenging, and that's what I'm looking for. My goals are for yoga to be my total workout and training program for strengthening, toning, improving balance, improving flexibility, healing, detoxifying, cleansing my mind and spirit of negative energy, finding balance, etc. Yoga does all these things and more. I don't know of anything else that is so complete and so beneficial.

I've worked out for years... both weight training and cardio... and although I enjoy both of those, I love yoga the most, because of how complete it is. Sure, I feel great after any kind of workout and athletic activity, but nothing compares to yoga for me. It gives me the highest level of satisfaction all around, the most energy, the most completely terrific feeling for mind, body, and spirit. I knew absolutely nothing about yoga when I first tried it, and now I'm hooked and can't wait to get to the studio to practice another session. The energy I gain from just one session of yoga lasts for at least 2-3 days after. It completely lifts my spirits and improves my mental state. I can't say enough about it. After a session of Bikram yoga, I feel like I want to go out and run a marathon. It's incredible! All I can say is, for those who haven't tried any form of yoga before and who are wondering what it's about, you just have to try it to see for yourself. You can listen to every yoga practitioner in the world to see what they have to say about it, but until you try it for yourself, you won't know how incredible it is!

Yoga has become my complete workout. If you are looking to try and fit a workout into your schedule and find you don't have a lot of time and are stressed just with the idea of thinking you won't have time for yoga, weight training, and cardio... I suggest trying Bikram yoga and/or power yoga. Both are high-intensity workouts and are very challenging. Bikram yoga is a 1.5 hour workout. I don't know how long the power yoga workout is, but most yoga programs seem to be 1 to 1.5 hours. For me, high intensity yoga programs make more sense than trying to do all the other things and having time for them, because it combines everything... strength training, cardio conditioning, balance improvement, stretching, alignment, breathing, intense focus of the mind, healing, detoxifying, improvement of circulation, etc. It doesn't make sense for me to try and fit 5 different workout programs into my schedule if I can do one and get even more out of it. The way I think of high-intensity yoga programs is that they are like a highly condensed workout... you get a ton of benefit in a small amount of time... whereas with other types of training, you would spend at least 3 times more time to get the same benefits.

Bikram yoga is a highly disciplined workout, and that's another aspect of it that I love.

Same here....lifted weights off+on for years before finding yoga.  After practicing Ashtanga Yoga for a few years, I would easily say the what I've learned about strength from yoga is immeasurable.  My post-yoga weight training gained body awareness, balance and what I would call "functional strength".

I continue to lift because I still think that weight conditioning is a must...but that said....If someone forced me to choose between standard free weight training and yoga...I'm choosing the most complete well-rounded workout I'm aware of -> YOGA.
