I know that many of teachers recommend using mantras in meditation practice or as a prayer, to repeat a word or phrase over and over again to keep it at the front of the mind.  What works for you?

In addition to recitation practice, some spiritual traditions encourage visualization practice or positive affirmations. I've heard this can be a powerful way to change your mind, quite literally. Any comments or thoughts on how to do this?

"Om Mani Padme Hung" is one I learned recently reading, "Awakening The Buddha Within"

I have my own TM mantra I learned 35 years ago.

I could use some advice on clearing your mind completely...I have a hard time meditating as quiet is hard to find in my house...What does everyone recommend? I've been doing yoga for years, but meditation is for me a "blind" practice..I'm not sure how to pull it off effectively.

Thanks and interesting site, I accidentally bumped into it and am excited to be here!

I was given one from Swami Vishnu Devananda from the Sivananda Yoga group. I do believe it helps and it is important which mantra you select because it creates energy and form when doing Japa meditation. A good book on this topic can be found at one of the ashrams/centers at Sivananda.org called “Meditation and Mantras” written by Swami Vishnu Devananda. “Om” is also a simple but good one to use. Hope this helps…love and peace, G

I am also new to the site.  I find that understanding that "clearing your mind completely" is not your goal is helpful for me.  That is the practice/meditation is the goal.  Keep bringing yourself back to your anchor/mantra when you notice that your mind has wandered or is "not clear".

For me, I like listening to music with mantras or kirtan-style music from Jai Uttal, Wah!, Suzin Green, Russill Paul.

I also love going to kirtans even though I am not a "singer." There's something about chanting in a group that is exquisite.

Meditation is not about clearing your mind completely. It's about being, and being in the present moment. I'd definately suggest reading up on meditation tips and techniques, just check out your local Barnes & Noble or whatever bookstore is around.

All forms of Meditative practices begin with an Ignorance of the practitioner: The ignorance being "I can realize myself or God consciousness, through Meditation"
Considering that, living Life itself is a form of Meditation.

I don't remember how I took to chanting OM, really. I think I just decided to try it one day in meditation. I had never used a mantra and after a minute or two, I hit a groove. I noticed that chanting OM is not like saying a word. It's not a pronunciation - it's a pure audible vibration with one's lips open, then shut. I found that it only took a couple minutes to get into a groove where the vibration caused a "beating" in my chest and the sound, coupled with the physical effect, made it nearly impossible for my mind to wander. Chanting OM is like a good friend; a place I can return to at any time. Even in the course of the workday, I can chant softly under my breath sitting at my desk. This is what works for me.
