Sell Power Back to Your Electric Company

Federal legislation known as Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act, passed in the 1970s, states that any private renewable energy producer in the United States has the right to sell power to the local utility company.

The law doesn’t state they have to make it easy or profitable. But net metering is a good deal for small-scale renewable energy producers.

Net metering allows you to sell excess power to a utility through your existing electric usage meter — at retail rates. Thirty-three states and six individual utilities support net metering.
