Woody Harrelson is best known for playing dimwit bartender Woody Boyd on Cheers. And thanks to syndication, you can catch his amusing performances many times a day. But know this: The dim bulb thing? It's an act. He's actually a smart guy and is well-versed on environmental topics.
Woody, who can currently be seen on the big screen in The Grand and Semi-Pro, has been promoting his films and talking green. He's known mostly for being outspoken about the legalization of marijuana, but he said his original goal was to draw attention to hemp — which has thousands of potential uses from biodegradable plastics to health food.
"It's unfortunate that when I started talking about all this — and partly through my own fault — the focus became totally about marijuana, and hemp got marginalized," he told Reuters UK. "My whole focus was on a sustainable economy, which we still don't have. But at least we're talking more about the melting ice-caps and greenhouse gases. The problem is, nothing's really changed yet and we live in a society where the economy is based on all these giant industries that are raping Mother Earth."
He went on to talk about how he mainly lives in Maui — with his wife and their two daughters — in a community of mostly organic farmers.
"We run off solar and wind generators if necessary," he told Reuters UK. "I've been there nine years and it's Shangri La to me. I have lots of fruit and coconut trees, and every day I swim, I surf, climb coconut trees, play with my kids, eat mangos. There's no form to it, which I kind of like."
Sounds divine… but, Woody, be careful climbing those coconut trees. We all remember what happened to Keith Richards!
If you see Renee Zellweger in the supermarket, do not — I repeat — do not look in her basket. The star of the new film Leatherheads (with yummy George Clooney) said she's become paranoid about shopping after a paparazzo followed her during a shopping trip and made public everything she purchased.
"I had to call my friends from a grocery store in Toronto and I remember saying, 'You know what, I think I'm turning into a paranoid freak because I swear to God people are looking into my shopping basket and deciding that I'm politically incorrect for my non-organic milk," ContactMusic reports. "As soon as I said it, I felt ridiculous but the next day I read all about my trip to the grocery store, so I was being followed through the grocery store. That's weird to me.
Renee: Didn't you know that all celebs who buy organic are automatically exempt from being photographed while shopping? Maybe you should give it a try. (Wink, wink.)
A few weeks back I mentioned that Colin Firth has an eco-friendly store, Eco Age, in London. Well, it's coming to the States. "New York is our next stop," the actor tells Page Six Magazine. "I really want to open a shop in Soho next year."
Next year? Well, that gives us time to save our pennies. As I told ya, his merchandise is pricey.
Britney Spears was praised for her appearance earlier this week on How I Met Your Mother (After the last year in the life of Britney, anytime she's fully dressed and able to speak is a praiseworthy occasion). But she's actually going the extra mile this time, auctioning off the clothes she wore in the show to benefit the Natural Resources Defense Council.
Now let's be honest — Britney has nothing to do with the actual auction. But I think she needs as much praise as possible right now to help get her back on track. Hot mess city.
Lastly, there's a new celebrity campaign called "I Am Voting for…" in which stars discuss which issues are important to them in Election 2008. Julia Louis-Dreyfus's cause? The environment. She talks solar panels, biodiesel and more in this cute spot.
