Celebrity Planet: Jenny & Jim Want Green Vaccines & More

Funny honeys Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey traveled to Washington, D.C. last week but the reason for their trip was no laughing matter.

The mother of a 6-year-old son with autism, Evan, 6, Jenny has been outspoken about the vaccination controversy, arguing that vaccinations have contributed to the incidence of autism in previously unaffected babies. So — along with Evan and Jim — she led 8,500 people through the streets of the capital in an attempt to have health agencies reassess the vaccine schedule and provide vaccines that are less toxic.

"Jenny's friends would kind of hint around and say, 'Hey, it would be kind of cool if you got involved in this,'" Jim told People, "and I thought to myself, 'This is just so inevitable. This just can't not happen.' If you care about the planet and about children, you have to."

Speaking of children, Jim and Jenny would make some cute ones... with great senses of humor.

Rock icon Neil Young is speeding ahead with plans to make his 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible into an electric car. Along with mechanic Johnathan Goodwin, Neil is making the model for the world's first affordable mass-produced electric-powered car.

"Johnathan and this car are going to make history," Neil told The Wichita Eagle. "We're going to change the world; we're going to create a car that will allow us to stop giving our wealth to other countries for petroleum."

He added: "You know, I thought long ago you could change the world by writing songs," he said. "But you can't change the world by writing songs. Oh, you can inspire a few people, get some of them to change their thinking about something. But you can't change the world by writing songs. But we could change it with this car."

I learned how to drive on a Lincoln and that gas-guzzlin' monster was huge. And I'd literally have to push the pedal to the metal anytime I climbed a hill in it. That's gotta be one heckuva a battery powering that thing. Whew.

Singer Jason Mraz posted a photo of himself in his underwear on his MySpace page. And while that made several headlines (go figure!), it was his chatter about his green diet that accompanied the photo that I really wanted to tell you about.

Eating all non-processed foods to give him energy during his tour, he says: "I will likely keep this up for a long time. I don't crave any other foods anymore. Anything processed just doesn't seem real... And I have no trouble spending hours in the grocery store reading the labels and talking with other customers. Plus, hot girls fresh from yoga hang out in natural food stores."

So if you're a yoga enthusiast and Jason is a rocker who makes your swoon — Brandon Flowers from the Killers does it for me — I recommend that y'all spend more time squeezing the organic eggplants at the grocery store. Here's Jason's tour schedule so you'll know when he'll be in your neighborhood.

When Heather Mills was awarded a huge chunk of Beatle Paul's fortune, I thought it was the last we'd heard of her for a while. Well, it wasn't, but I'm okay with it because she's in the spotlight for a good cause. She was in New York to host a book launch party for A Rare Breed of Love. This book tells the true story of Baby, a three-legged poodle rescued from a puppy mill, which will hopefully help stop animal cruelty. It's nice to see Paul's ex being passionate about something... other than cash.

After much hullabaloo, Discovery's eco-channel, Planet Green, has officially launched. So for the first time, there's an entire network dedicated to green issues and sustainable living. We've talked about several of the shows here — like Tommy Lee's Battleground Earth: Ludacris vs. Tommy Lee and Tom Bergeron's Supper Club — and there's even Hollywood Green hosted by Access Hollywood's Maria Menounos, which, presumably is a lot like what we talk about right here. Have you seen it? If so, let me know what you think.

Until next week...

‘Sacred travel’ lets you re-create yourself at spiritual hotspots

Love to travel but no longer content with South Beach or Vail? There is another option available. A number of years ago, I wanted a trip that was based on personal growth and discovery. Today this is called “sacred travel.” (Back then it was about taking my savings and heading out with a backpack.) I first [...]

One flight = HOW much CO2?! Slashing my holiday footprint …

I did the math in my head. We have one car that barely gets driven, a TV and DVD player that get unplugged when not in use, plus a diet free of meat — and I have to admit that I was feeling a bit overconfident when I plugged my numbers into the carbon calculator [...]

How to make fabric gift bags

A website I visited recently recommended knitting holiday stockings. What a lovely idea, I thought. But I’d have to remember how to knit … I think I’ll just buy some “homespun” stockings instead. Yet there is a simple project I did one year for the holidays that was very rewarding in the same way [...]

Detox yoga how-to sequence

Detoxing after the holiday “re-tox” — no matter how much carnage was left on that Thanksgiving dinner table, or how much stress crept into your weekend — is as easy as unrolling your mat. Stairs till you drop! Mall shoppers are stepping up

I recently read an article about a mall in England that posted colorful, stand-out signs by the escalator/stairs in the mall last Christmas to encourage and inspire shoppers to take the stairs instead of the escalators. The article noted that “normally, about 4 percent of people at the mall take the stairs but after adding [...]

Stressed? Don’t work out longer; just shake things up

Many people think that tons of rigorous workouts help relieve stress. But research shows that it can actually have the opposite effect. Changing up your routine can ease stress more effectively than doing MORE of the same. You can change your workout routine in many ways including … When doing fat-burning workouts, change the settings, machine or [...]

Be first on your block to get a farmer

We all need a farmer. Someone who who looks us in the eye when she tells us how she feeds her animals, or how can’t offer eggs this week because the free-range hens have laid the eggs somewhere she can’t find them ...

How gratitude can transform your body

Thinking about Thanksgiving prompted me to write this blog. I saved it to my computer planning to enter it online as soon as I got a chance. Then coincidently I heard a radio interview with psychologist Robert Emmons, author of a book called Thanks. Emmons has spent years studying positive psychology, and in the interview [...]
