Nikki Sharp was tired of her boring bedroom. A communication coordinator at Gaiam's Broomfield, Colo., headquarters, she brought in sad-looking photos of where she rested her head each night. She knew it was time for an update — and she wanted to go green.
We sent in designer Miki LaMont to make over this ho-hum bedroom into a retreat more suited to the life and style of this young, eco-minded professional. Lamont transformed the space into a sophisticated, eco-friendly bedroom retreat using organic and natural fabrics, recycled materials and fair trade décor.
"Now coming into this room is a completely different experience," says LaMont. "It went from feeling neglected and almost bleak to harmonious, cozy and inviting."
Lamont says getting started with a "green room" makeover begins with a single focal point. "Pick a primary piece that has a look, color and feel that pleases you," she says. "Starting a green makeover could begin with a fabulous lamp, rug or headboard that's made with eco-friendly materials. We started with the duvet, then chose colors and accessories to complement the print and create a subtle eastern theme."
