The Pescatarian's Dilemma
Although I don't eat beef or poultry or pork, I do eat fish -- mainly because I love sushi. But lately, a lot of fishy sushi news has been making the eco-headlines. So here's your guide to the pescatarian's dilemma:
A sushi-specific seafood guide (PDF) is now available. This downloadable wallet-sized cheat sheet comes courtesy of the Monterey Bay Aquarium, already well known for its more generic Seafood Watch Guide. Carry it -- along with your reusable chopsticks -- whenever you head to your favorite sushi restaurant!
Find out why sustainable sushi's important by reading a recap of the French Culinary Institute for the New York Sustainable Sushi Tasting, written by Maria Falgoust for Grist. Yes, there's bad news in there -- "Over 70 percent of world fish stocks are fully exploited or over fished and catches are declining," for example -- but there's good news for fish eaters too, i.e. "farmed bay scallops, Pacific halibut and tilapia are good selections."
If all the fishy news has you heading to your nearest vegan joint, try ordering the veggie burger. Writes Meg Favreau at Table Matters: “I have a theory that you can tell how much a restaurant thinks about its food by the quality of its veggie burger.” Eat your burger, rate the restaurant -- then let us know whether or not you agree with Meg's theory!
