Review of Eckhart Tolle's new book 'Guardians of Being'
The author of The Power of Now and A New Earth teams up with MUTTS comic strip creator Patrick McDonnell to remind us that pets don't worry about what’s next, so why should we?

A spiritual teacher and a cartoonist.

When you first see the new book Guardians of Being by Eckhart Tolle and Patrick McDonnell, such a pairing may seem unlikely. But just open the cover. The idea of this unique collaboration quickly changes from possible, to believable, to perfect, with every turn of the page.

McDonnell, the creator of the popular comic strip MUTTS, says that he, like millions of others, was deeply touched by Tolle’s 1999 international bestseller The Power of Now. That book’s simple but powerful message — that the “now” is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment — changed McDonnell’s life.

So when McDonnell had an idea for a book on how we can learn about inner peace from our beloved companion animals, he naturally thought of Tolle. Tolle liked the idea, and that unlikely but perfect collaboration was born.

In Guardians of Being, McDonnell’s whimsical artwork allows you to smile, chuckle, even laugh out loud as you contemplate Tolle’s thought-provoking, soul-searching prose. As Tolle writes, “Just watching an animal closely can take you out of your mind and into the present moment, which is where the animal lives all the time, surrendered to life.” You read the inspiring words on the page, accompanied by the charming visual representations, and you truly understand how incredibly special animals are and what joy they infuse into our lives.

Our dogs and cats don’t get caught up in worrying about what’s going to happen next, so why should we? They play. They eat. They love us unconditionally. They just are. Those with a passion for animals — and those who would welcome a gentle reminder of how incredible they are — will appreciate how Guardians of Being provokes a deep reverence for all beings in the universe and for each single moment of every day.

So the next time you want to take your dog for a walk, don’t. Let your dog take YOU for a walk, and see the world in a whole new light.
