How to Cultivate the Spiritual in Everyday Life

4 steps to bring spirituality into everyday living

What does it mean to be spiritual? Rabbi Micah D. Greenstein defines spirituality as religion experienced intimately. Stewart Bitkoff, Ed.D., says that spirituality is about making life like a prayer.

Your spiritual life includes your spiritual practices, like prayer, and your spiritual journey to get closer to your God or higher power, but it also includes your everyday interactions with other human beings. In Care of Mind, Care of Spirit, Gerald G. May says that spiritual formation is your growth and development as a whole person. Here are some steps you can take to cultivate spirituality in everyday life and grow on your spiritual path.

Step 1: Spend some time alone

Dr. Bitkoff says that to increase your everyday spirituality, you should dedicate 10 to 20 minutes daily for inward exploration through prayer, journaling or meditation.

Step 2: Give to others

You can improve your everyday spirituality, says Dr. Bitkoff, by volunteering or regularly donating to your favorite charity.

Step 3: Pray and meditate

Spiritual growth is a process that needs to be practiced like any other skill. Pray more. Meditate more often. Attend religious or spiritual gatherings more often.

Step 4: Exercise more and live healthier

According to Dr. Bitkoff, because we are multi-level beings, we must take proper care of all our levels. If we want to improve our spiritual well-being, we must also care for our physical bodies. We must complement our spiritual health with our physical health.
