Finding the Perfect Yoga Pants
There are many things to consider when shopping for any item of clothing, so it should be no surprise that the same is true of yoga pants. There are both the functional and fashionable points of the pants to consider. Here is a list of things to think about when searching for the perfect yoga pants.
If you are headed to class for the purpose of losing weight and don’t feel good about your current figure, you'll want to steer clear of the second-skin type yoga pants (you know what I’m talking about). But even if you’re uncomfortable with your present body shape, don’t shy away from form-fitting altogether. By choosing yoga pants that fit well around the waist and stay slightly fitted through the leg, you will be flattering your figure much more than you would coming to class in over-sized sweats. Plus, bulky sweatpants might hinder you from doing deep stretches and certain poses.
On the other hand, if you are comfortable with your body, then you might be interested in a more fitted style. In either case, make sure the pants you choose are not too tight around the waist. As you bend and fold yourself into some of the more advanced positions, you don’t want your waist band cutting off circulation.
Whether you choose looser or tighter fitting yoga pants, you will want to make sure that the fabric is breathable. Pants made of natural fibers such as linen or cotton are a good choice, and pants made of a natural fiber/lycra blend offer a little more stretch to the fabric. Check the garment care label carefully when considering your yoga pants because you're likely to wash them frequently. Select pants that are preshrunk (when dealing with cotton), easily washable and colorfast.
Next, think about what color pants you want to bend and stretch in, or rather be seen bending and stretching in. Of course, dark colors like black, dark brown and navy blue tend to be the most flattering. But if those colors don't appeal to you, you can still get that slimming look with deep plum or a dark evergreen. If yoga is a lifestyle for you, you might even try going seasonal for fun and variety. Try switching to pastels in the spring; bright, vibrant colors in the summer; and darker, jewel-tone yoga pants for the fall and winter.
When finding the perfect yoga pants, you must consider the length, which usually come in three different varieties. The shortest pants are designed to end at your knees. This style is good on hot days or when practicing Bikram yoga, where temperatures are intentionally increased.
Medium-length pants end mid-calf and are good for in-between seasons or if you find full length pants uncomfortable and cumbersome. Pants that end at your ankles or top of your feet are great for cooler yoga studios and outdoor locations, and also tend to be the most flattering cut.
If you do decide to go with full-length pants, be sure that they do not touch the ground when you stand barefoot. Yoga pants that are too long could cause you to slip or trip.
There is no right or wrong choice in yoga pants — only personal preference. The companies that make yoga pants for men and women have created them to be as functional and fashionable as possible, but ultimately the choice is yours.
