Celebrity Planet: Paris Hilton "Solves" Energy Crisis, Salma's Green Diapers and More!
Paris Hilton was thrust into the middle of the Presidential campaign last week when John McCain's camp used footage of her, without her permission, in an ad spot hoping to illustrate how Barack Obama is just another celebrity, not a leader. The heiress fought back this week with her own video, hosted on Will Ferrell's comedy Web site FunnyorDie, and in the process shone a spotlight on the energy crisis. Her idea? A combination of McCain's offshore oil drilling plan and Obama's incentives for new energy technology.
"Energy crisis solved!" the bathing suit clad Paris smiles. "I'll see you at the debates."
As someone who's grown tired of Paris over the years, I found the video pretty hilarious and think you will too.
Salma Hayek is officially a single mom since she broke off her engagement to billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, but she hasn't split from her usage of environmentally-friendly products. The Ugly Betty producer, who sits on Global Green USA's board, has gone green with her household products.
"She's really into Seventh Generation, especially the nontoxic, chlorine-free disposable diapers," an insider tells Star. "Salma wants what's best for her baby and the environment."
While I love Jenny McCarthy and love what a great advocate she is for her son, who she says developed autism after receiving too many childhood vaccinations too soon, Amanda Peet made a great point when she was recently on Good Morning America talking about her pro-vaccination stance. (She recently filmed some PSAs for "Every Child By Two" — a group seeking to raise awareness of the need for timely infant immunizations.)
"I'm not a doctor, which brings me to another point," Amanda said. "It seems like the media is often giving celebrities and actors more authority on this issue than they're giving the experts and that's a sad fact. And I know that's a paradox — that's part of why I wanted to become a spokesperson, so I could say, 'Please don't listen to me, don't listen to the actors, go to the experts."
Agreed. Meanwhile, celebrities sure love their eco-friendly cars! This week I saw snapshots of Ryan Reynolds getting into his Prius hybrid (that had an Obama bumper sticker!), Julia Roberts climbed into her hybrid after a girls' night out, Shaquille O'Neal shoved himself into an itsy bitsy Smart Car and Jamie Lee Curtis happily posed next to her new Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. (Whew – that's a mouthful!)
"I really wasn't expecting it to be so luxurious," Jamie Lee said of the car. "It's luxurious, luxurious, luxurious! I love the interior layout, design and access to controls. It is user-friendly and very modern."
For now, the car is only being leased from three dealerships in Southern California – and the price tag is over over $600 a month. You have to have a lot of green to go green!
Last weekend they held the Teen Choice Awards in Hollywood. (Check out lots of lovely photos here.) Some of the stars of Gossip Girl — including Leighton Meester, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick — made very stylish entrances in VW Clean Diesel Jetta TDIs. I think the awful Hummer trend is officially over... thank god.
Lastly, I've given Morgan Freeman a hard time about piloting his private plane solo to commute to work in Los Angeles and New York, but I'm wishing the veteran actor — who founded Plan!tNow, a hurricane and storm-related disaster relief organization — a speedy recovery after crashing a non-hybrid vehicle in Miss. over the weekend and becoming seriously injured. Get well soon!
