Celebrity Planet: Matt Modine Pedals His Message at DNC
A few weeks back in Celebrity Planet, I told you how Matthew Modine, founder of Bike Ride for a Day, was encouraging New Yorkers to kick their cars (and cabs!) and ride bikes. Well, earlier this week he brought his eco-friendly mission to Denver, where a little something called the Democratic National Convention was taking place.
While celebrities like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner listened to political speeches, Matthew was spreading the word about Freewheelin, a bike sharing program that let anyone in town for the DNC — or at the upcoming Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-Saint Paul — use one of 1,000 bikes, free of charge, as part of a partnership between Humana and Bikes Belong.
"Riding a bicycle is something you can do that has an immediate positive impact on the environment" Matthew says. "So when organizations like Humana get together to create an opportunity to empower people with something like a bicycle, it's not only going to have a positive impact on the environment, but it's going to help with heart disease, with diabetes, with obesity. So this is a win-win-win-win situation."
Green groomer Brad Pitt arrived in Venice this week, with sons Maddox and Pax, for the city's famed film festival, which continues through Sept. 6. On his agenda in addition to promoting his movie Burn After Reading? Hitting the red carpet with George Clooney on behalf of their charity Not On Our Watch. The organization was launched last year by the fellas as well as Matt Damon and Don Cheadle and has raised more than $7 million to help victims of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur and the cyclone in Burma. Anyway, Brad and George had a heckuva time partying for a good cause and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning. Why oh why wasn't I at the Venice Film Fest this week?
The Stand Up to Cancer multi-network TV charity event — airing Sept. 5 — is going to be a star-studded event. Stars like Halle Berry, Carrie Underwood, water guzzler Lance Armstrong and Jennifer Aniston are going to participate. Two people I'm eager to see are Katie Couric and Christina Applegate, who have personal ties to the deadly disease. Katie gives a great interview in this week's People about how cancer "destroyed her family", having lost both her husband and sister to forms of the disease. Also, Christina recently had a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. You may want to grab a box of tissues before you plunk down on your sofa for that one.
Speaking of Lance, his ex-fiance, Sheryl Crow, shows of her 1-year-old son, Wyatt, and her 154-acre Tennessee ranch in this week's People magazine. She talks about how, when she's not touring, she's happy just overseeing her farm's haymaking and tending to her organic garden, where she grows squash, corn and tomatoes. "It will be nice to raise my kids to eat off the land they live on, she tells the mag. You can see video footage of her gorgeous farm, on People.com.
Emmy Rossum was seen shopping at Whole Foods in Beverly Hills recently with her reusable My Bag Cares tote (that Dancing with the Stars' Shannon Elizabeth also loves). "I have celiac disease," the pretty singer/actress, who was scanning the ingredients in Kashi's TLC Honey Sesame crackers, has said. "I can't eat wheat, gluten or bad carbs."
Actress Michelle Monaghan, who was in Gone Baby Gone and Mission: Impossible III is expecting her first child and told the New York Post that she's had intense organic ice cream cravings, so she's been hitting up the Van Leeuwen Atrisan Ice Cream truck in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood. "I've been chasing this ice cream truck around all summer," she told the paper. "They have the most amazing ice cream. It's organic, and the peppermint-chip is to die for."
Also to die for... football hunk Tom Brady. The Patriots jock just dropped $11 million for 3-acres of land — no house! — in Brentwood, Calif., where he and his supermodel gal pal Gisele Bündchen plan to build their dream house. Word is he wants to be on the West Coast so he's closer to his 1-year-old son Jack. (Tom's ex actress Bridget Moynahan lives in Pacific Palisades with the tot.)
It's been a busy week for Tom and Gisele, who also attended a benefit for FORGE, which works with displaced communities in Africa, at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston. The superstar duo watched a performance by Aersomith's Steven Tyler and Joey Kramer at the event which also featured silent and live auctions benefiting the charity. And I thought he just threw around a football! Keep up the good work, Tommy boy.
That's all for now. See you next week!
